New Teacher Feature: An Interview with Ms. Hoang

Ms. Hoang is a first-year chemistry and interactions teacher at Grant. We had a conversation with her to learn about her interests!

What is your previous teaching experience or education?

I got my chemistry degree and teaching credential at CSUN. [Afterwards], I taught at Magnolia Science Academy in Reseda for almost a year. So now it's my second year teaching.

What brought you to Grant?

I saw that Grant was hiring for a science teacher. I looked at the website and saw how beautiful the campus was, and so I gave myself a chance here.

Why did you choose to teach chemistry and interactions?

I majored in chemistry in college, and I love the chemistry behind everything. I also loved teaching— I was a volunteer Vietnamese teacher at my church, so I combined both my interests and became a science teacher.

What is your favorite thing about Grant so far?

Probably when Ms. Nereyda does the announcements— it’s my highlight of the morning.

What are some values you hope to instill in your students?

I hope every student will achieve good things in the future. But to do that, I never want them to stop learning, both for their personal and professional growth. Hard work, put in the effort, hard work pays off. ANd also to have a kind heart and the desire to help others.

Fun Facts!

Do you have a favorite movie?Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. It's been a long time, but I love the scene where Harry fights the dragon.

Bucket list item you want to complete?

Skydiving, it's cool yet dangerous

If you could have dinner with any one person, who? Why?

Jesus, he's my everything and I wouldn't be here today without him today.

Best advice you have ever gotten?

You never lose, you either win or you learn.

Favorite hobbies?

Swimming, hiking, and the beach with my friends— I like going to a trail in Pasadena where you can hike by a waterfall.

Describe your life in song.

Christmas is coming, so Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The reason behind that is that everyone makes fun of him for his bright red nose, but turns out he’s a really special guy. I think everyone has differences, which are all very special. Nobody should make fun of your differences, but embrace them instead.

Thanks for your time Ms. Hoang!
